Hinsdale Center for the Arts

The Hinsdale Center for the Arts, winner of the prestigious 1999 Governor's Award for the Arts, is a not-for-profit regional arts center and local arts agency serving the west suburban Chicagoland region with a wide range of high quality visual arts and performing arts programs year-round. The HCA provides art exhibitions, classes in music, art, dance, theater, and literary arts, individual music lessons, workshops, festivals, summer multi-arts camp for children, outreach programs, and technical assistance to arts organizations and artists. The HCA's Community Arts Access Regranting Program, funded by the Illinois Arts Council and the HCA, supports arts programs in schools and organizations throughout the western Cook and DuPage County region. Two annual highlights of the HCA programs include the "Adornments" Exhibition and Sale in November and December, featuring the work of over 100 artists, and the Hinsdale "Fine Arts Festival" in June that the HCA co-sponsors with the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce.

The HCA was founded in 1980 and was designated in 1996 by the Illinois Arts Council as an "Established Regional Arts Institution", one of only two arts organizations in Chicago's western suburbs to receive this honor, and one of only forty-four arts organizations state-wide to be designated. Last year, through its on-site and outreach programs, the HCA serviced more that 100,000 people of all ages and abilities from over 54 communities in the western suburbs and Chicago metro area, plus neighboring regions and states. The HCA is supported by contributions from corporations and individuals, grants from foundations and the Illinois Arts Council, earned revenues from classes and operations, and proceeds from annual fundraising events. Members of the HCA, which currently number over 900, receive discounts on classes, a newsletter, arts calendar, invitations to exhibition openings, special events, and benefits such as the popular "Dinner a l'Art." The HCA is located in Katherine Legge Memorial Park, 5903 County Line Road, Hinsdale, IL 60521..

Museums

Ben Fuller Museum

The Ben Fuller House is a recent addition to the Historic Gateway area located on York Road between the villages of Hinsdale and Oakbrook. This circa 1840 farmhouse is across York Road and down Salt Creek from the Old Graue Mill. The house is important historically as an early example of balloon construction and as the home of Ben Fuller, one of our earliest settlers.

... The Ben Fuller Museum Association is in the process of restoring this building as a house museum. Since acquiring the structure, the Association has built a foundation, relocated the house and gutted the inside of all modern changes. It has completed a historic research and restoration study with noted preservation architect Wilbert Hasbrouck, FAIA. This study will be the guide as detailed restoration drawings and material specifications are prepared. Recent restoration activities include a new roof, gutters, front porch, doors, windows and shutters. Interior restoration will begin soon.

The Association anticipates that the Ben Fuller House will ultimately occupy a significant position as an educational and historical asset to the Villages of Hinsdale and Oak Brook.

For further information or applications for membership please write, P.O. Box 701, Hinsdale, IL 60522-0701.

Historical Society

The Hinsdale Historical Society was established in 1973, the same year the Village was officially 100 years old. The purpose of the Society is to collect, preserve and promote the history of Hinsdale by making available to the public materials and information significant in this regard. ...

The Historical Society headquarters building, constructed in 1874, was donated to the Society by School District 181. It was moved in 1981 to its present park site location made available by the Village of Hinsdale. With private funding and volunteer efforts, the building was restored to house a museum illustrating life in early Hinsdale as well as offices and archives space for the Society. The museum is open to the public every Friday and Saturday from 10am - 2pm, and anytime by special appointment. The address is 15 South Clay, Hinsdale, IL 60521.

In a cooperative effort with the Village of Hinsdale and grant assistance from the State of Illinois, the Society saved the former 100 year old Immanuel Church at 302 South Grant from demolition. Renamed Immanuel Hall, the property was deeded to the Historical Society and is now undergoing renovation. When complete, Immanuel Hall will serve as an intimate, historic venue for community events.

Regular programs are sponsored in various areas of history. Guided tours of the museum and Immanuel Hall are always available. For more information on tours, upcoming programs, memberships, volunteering, researching the history of your home, or archival assistance, call the Historical Society's information number, 630.789.2600, or visit the website at www.hinsdalehistory.org
